Greetings,

Insane! Who would have thought 2 years ago that we would have a public skatepark like Berry Hill? So many people put in an incredible amount of their personal time to make it happen. To name a few… Gavin. Reid. Ben. Jonathon (Ware-not pictured). These guys killed it! Friends for Skateparks was founded by these guys. They created this non-profit organization to raise money, awareness and to be a voice for our community to the City to make their dream of Berry Hill a reality. I personally can’t thank them enough for what they have done.

On November 13th, 2015 the board for Friends of Skateparks voted me in as the new president. I have had a skateboard under my feet since 1984. I’m incredibly excited about the potential for the future of our organization. I want to thank Gavin, the previous president, for his hard work, personal time and inspiration.

Lexington has long needed an organization like Friends for Skateparks. We have long needed a voice to the City. We have long needed a fundraising organization like Friends for Skateparks. Well, we have it. I want this organization to pick up where Gavin left off. I want this organization to continue to do whatever we can to provide for the best facilities in Kentucky that will increase the stoke for our passion. We will work to build new skateparks and to rehabilitate, expand and improve our existing parks.

Stay tuned to our website and Facebook for upcoming fundraising events. We will need volunteers. We will need your help. This organization is here to serve the community and we will need the community’s help.

Sincerely,

Roderick Saylor

President

Pictures of Flow Bowl Progress!

Check out these pictures of park progress!  Took them from inside the flow bowl.  Props to Dreamland for being cool with me shooting them.  Somethings to note… It looks like the flow bowl will actually have a double waterfall with the left side (side closest to old pool house) being a bit more shallow than the right side.  Deep end is…. deep!  Some really cool things to check out here.  Tomorrow I’ll have some updated pictures of the snake run.  Enjoy!

Berry Hill Skatepark Update (July 2)

Hello friends!

I wanted to give you a little update on where things stand with the Berry Hill Skatepark project…

* WHERE WE ARE – Right now, city officials, Dreamland Skateparks, and F4SP are working to determine what actual phases we will be included in the park.  This involves some major donation “asks” (which potentially could get us the entire park!) as well as finalizing up any smaller donations (naming bricks) as well as investigating potential gift-in-kind opportunities exist from local construction companies.  At some point, probably in the next couple of weeks, this process will be concluded so that the official construction drawings can be completed and construction can begin.  At that point it gets a little harder to add a phase–so right now is a crucial point in the project!

As of right now, we are at just shy of $600,000 which would leave us a little short of phase one and two.  If things stand where they are, we likely would see a slightly trimmed phase one and two with most of the major elements included. I have a hard time imagining a phase one without phase two and I believe that everyone involved believes phase one and two will be included at a minimum.  So over the next couple of weeks all of this will get fine tuned.  Our hope is that a major donor will step up to match what we (The City and F4SP) have now!  If that happens… we get it all!  Let’s hope and pray that someone will rise to the occasion as this will likely be a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for our community!

* WE STILL NEED YOUR HELP! – With that said, the number one thing that Friends for Skateparks can do is to acquire “bricks” for the park.  $450– You will become a part of history with a 4″ x 8″ commemorative brick that will be incorporated in Lexington’s next skatepark, featuring an inscription of your choice (3 lines; 14 characters per line). $900 – You will become a part of history with an 8″ x 8″ commemorative brick that will be incorporated in Lexington’s next skatepark featuring an inscription of your choice (4-6 lines; 14 characters per line).  DONATE NOW HERE!!!

*  INDIEGOGO CAMPAIGN CONCLUDES – We concluded our Indiegogo campaign and raised $4,471!!!  Thanks to all who supported the effort!  Your “perks” will be on their way soon!

* FINAL DESIGN! – here are the drafts…

Here Are The Proposed Designs!!!

Below is concept A and concept B presented to us tonight by Dreamland Skateparks.  A few things to note.

1.  You can still email your thoughts and suggestions to Dreamland for 1 WEEK.  Email your suggestions (or encouragments) here: berryhilldream@gmail.com  Please make sure you fully understand what you are looking at in these designs before you email them.  If you have questions then post them and those of us at the meeting will do our best to answer your questions.

2.  A lot of good suggestions came from the meeting tonight.  There seemed to be a general consensus that moving the snake run out of the middle of the park and making the street area a bit larger would be a good idea.

3.  With the communities support over the next two months, there is a very good chance that the park will be larger than these concepts with elements from both being included.  Donate HERE!

I will offer my opinions later, but for now, enjoy taking a look!!!

Sign Up For A Volunteer “Team” Today!

Sign Up for A Volunteer Team Today!

At our “Launch Meeting” a few weeks ago we shard about the need for the community to get involved in one of the various “teams” that will help raise funds over the next few months. Didn’t make the meeting? Now worries! Below is the list of teams.  If you are interested in participating then please email Elizabeth HERE and she will notify about the the first meeting for each of these groups.

“Move Your Feet “ Campaign Team – We need a team of people committed to help spread the word about our crowd sourcing campaign (IndieGoGo) currently going on. This will involve coming up with creative ways to spread the word through social media!

Local Fundraising/Grant Team – There are numerous opportunities locally to apply for grants and involve F4SP with other existing fundraisers. We need a team of folks to find out what those are and sign us up!

Special Events and Grand Opening Team – F4SP will host a few events over the next year related to the new park and we need folks to help with the planning. Grand Opening, Ribbon Cutting, as well as partner with other events (Cosmic Invasion, Second Sunday, Others?) in the region where we can be visible and share the need.

Kids Involvement Team – How can we get kids to take ownership and get them to pitch in as little as a dollar to help fund the new park? Car Wash? Skate-A-Thon? This will be the question that this team will tackle and seek to create opportunities for kids to help the cause!

Letter Campaign – We are going to take the work out of sending letters to individuals and business. We are going to create and mail a letter for anyone willing to provide us with the addresses. Can you help us by providing addresses? Recruit others to provide addresses? Let us know! (Note: you can supply your own letter if you wish).
We look forward to hearing from you!  This is going to be a blast!
